Range - endemic to South Africa, this species occupies the southernmost extreme of Africa.

Natural History - extremely well-hidden tortoise, in its native habitat it occupies small hiding places under bushes and rodent burrows. This species will make a loud noise if disturbed. During the mating season (June-January), the scales above the nares on males become bright orange or red.
