Pancake Tortoise

Malacochersus tornieri

Range - occurs in arid, rocky areas, and in kopjes - isolated, rocky outcroppings - between southern Kenya and northern Tanzania.

Natural History - this tortoise is an excellent climber; it inhabits narrow rocky cracks and crevices. The flat body, long and powerful limbs, and high energy allow this tortoise to move quickly. It has a natural aversion to sun and heat. High demand for this species, driven by the international pet trade, led some to destroy their rocky retreats with machinery in an effort to collect the tortoise to sell.
