Description - Bernard Devaux's Village des Tortues is an excellent example of effective conservation. The center is run by locals - providing a source of education for the locals. The local people must first have knowledge of the plight of the species, before they can change their ways.
Le Village des Tortues also has a veterinary hospital for tortoises found injured - a service that is all but impossible to find in rural Madagascar. The assurance colony breeds tortoises for "rewilding," and also accepts tortoises that were ornaments in gardens and courtyards. We also visit the long-term breeding program run by Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust.
