Turtle Conservancy Protects 2162 acres with the new purchase of our Cuatro Ciénegas land preserve

We did it! Thanks for generous donor support, Turtle Conservancy purchased 2162 acres of land in Cuatro Ciénegas: a desert oasis in the Chihuahuan Desert of Northern Mexico.

This purchase ensures that this irreplaceable ecosystem, home to nearly 100 unique plant and animal species—including three critically endangered turtle species, is protected

Why Mexico?

  • Second only to the United States, Mexico boasts the greatest diversity of turtle species, making Mexico a priority country for the TC's conservation efforts
  • The TC protects 4 distinct land preserves in Mexico spanning five states: Sonora, Durango, Chihuahua, and Coahuila to protect critically endangered and endemic turtles and tortoises.
  • Today the TC protects nearly 100,000 acres of wilderness in Mexico

Together, we raised $215,000, matched 2:1 by an anonymous donor, bringing our total funds to $645,500!

The acquisition of key lands in Cuatro Ciénegas, in collaboration with local and international conservationists, is only possible because of your commitment to protecting Earth’s biodiversity.

Together, we’ve taken a significant step toward preserving one of the planet’s most unique ecosystems.
