AZA Chelonian TAG Meeting

AZA Chelonian TAG Meeting
April 29, 2016
Paul Gibbons

This month, Managing Director Dr. Paul Gibbons attended the annual AZA Chelonian Taxon Advisory Group meeting in St. Louis. Dr. Gibbons is a member of the Steering Committee for this group and he was invited to give three presentations describing the work of the Turtle Conservancy. He talked about methods to determine whether turtle eggs are fertile, including the findings of a recently published study he co-authored with award-winning researchers at San Diego Zoo Global. Then he described his recent participation in the Galápagos Giant Tortoise Recovery Program searching for the descendants of extinct species on the remote slopes of Volcán Wolf, an active volcano on Isla Isabela, the largest island in the archipelago. He then went on to highlight the collaboration and teamwork among AZA and global turtle conservation organizations who came together to successfully return over 3800 confiscated Critically Endangered Palawan Forest Turtles back to their natural habitat in the Philippines.
